Day 8

Phew!, We are certainly seeing a bit of the country.  More coach and more coastline.  Such variety... one minute spectacular rugged coastline  and then high tree covered mountains...

Today was a quiet day with only 2 planned activities.   After a short drive further along the Aegean coast from Marmaris we took a peaceful boat cruise to visit the ancient city of Caunos.  Another bustling coastal town that died out through malaria which was prevalent in this swampy area.   On the way back along the river to the coach we passed fascinating tombs carved out of the cliff.   How did they do this?  They are about 60 metres up the cliff face. Beyond were the breeding grounds for the Logger Head Turtles but despite all efforts to bring them to the surface it was impossible to get a good photo. Itwas more fun watching the jossling for a place on our other boat
We had lunch at a riverside restaurant and then back into the coach for a 1 and 1/2 hour drive to Kalkan where we will stay for 2 nights.  I am getting a lot of knitting done and 2 other ladies are knitting as well…
We drove through pine tree forests and passed snow-capped mountains
and arrived at the harbour side town of Kalkan and our hotel, either Happy or Harpy Hotel… they are not sure,  overlooking the bay.  It is a picturesque area with modern white, one and two storied holiday houses covered with brilliant coloured bougainvillea and framed by ancient olive trees.  A quick dip in the pool and a pool side dinner finished the day….. very pleasant…. We will be here for 2 nights which is perfect after the last 3 busy days.   We have English speaking  programs on TV… although I have just watched the Turkish version of  “Turkey Has Talent” in Turkish  …. and now watching Andre Rieu in German?   No Life Style Channel…..   Life’s tough….  Another quiet day tomorrow…. Go Manly… and hello daylight saving…
